Our time is called the “information age.” A modern person must not only be able to read, write, speak, but also have information literacy, which gives everyone the opportunity not only to receive information, but also to be able to evaluate and apply it for themselves, to make it useful.
The library of the Peter and Paul Construction and Economic College is the most important information, cultural and educational center for teachers and students of the college.
Library with a total area of 271 sq.m. located on the first floor of educational building No. 1, it consists of a subscription, a reading room with 45 seats and a book depository with an area of 194 sq.m.
Today, the college library has a sufficient book fund, including a fund of educational, methodological and scientific literature on general education, basic and major disciplines on paper and electronic media. The library collection is formed in accordance with the goals and objectives of the educational process, as well as the information needs of users. Educational, methodological, scientific literature and periodicals are purchased. The book fund is 65,362 copies, of which 58,192 copies are textbooks and educational, methodological and scientific literature, 7,170 copies of fiction, 6,219 copies of educational, methodological and scientific literature in the state language. The library has a collection of electronic textbooks in the state and Russian languages.
The library provides information support for the educational process. The activities of the college library contribute to the educational process, the formation of a student’s personal culture and make it possible to increase the efficiency of information services for the educational process through library and bibliographic services to students, teachers, disseminates knowledge that shapes the bibliographic and information culture of students, while improving traditional and mastering new library technologies.
In the system of various forms of service, reference, bibliographic and information work is of great importance. The library conducts reference and bibliographic work in several areas: compiling thematic folders (personalities, significant events, presidential messages, etc.), bibliographic indexes, issuing bibliographic references, information work, and promoting library and bibliographic knowledge.
To make its collections more widely known, the library conducts:
—according to the schedule, in the month of September with first-year students bibliographic lessons: “Acquaintance with the structure of the library”, “Acquaintance with special periodicals”, “Basics of working with books and other printed publications”, “Basics of working with reference and bibliographic apparatus”, which ends with a tour of the library and distribution of educational literature.
—informing readers about the arrival of new literature: book exhibitions, bibliographic reviews, distribution of booklets - new products, distribution over a local network. “Information Day” – exhibitions of open viewing of new literature in specialties are organized. At meetings of the methodological council, publications of teachers and new literature are presented.
—Upon request, bibliographic references are provided in oral and written form. Sources of references – periodicals, Internet resources, “Law” database. All references are recorded in the bibliographic reference journal and in the library diary.
For memorable and significant dates, the library organizes book and thematic exhibitions with an overview for students. Permanent exhibitions: “Message of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan”, “New Literature” (educational, periodicals), “State Symbols of the Republic of Kazakhstan”, “Constitution-Guarantor of the Future”, “We are for a healthy lifestyle”, etc.
One of the areas of the library’s work is the production of bibliographic products: bibliographic indexes, written bibliographic references, bibliographic lists on a specific topic, information and reference publications, etc.
Much attention is paid to mass work and promotion of the reading culture. The library hosts events aimed at the patriotic, spiritual, moral, legal, and aesthetic education of students. The themes of the events vary, but special attention is paid to significant and memorable dates.
In accordance with the library's work plan, open viewings of literature, book exhibitions, conversations, library lessons, literary evenings, reader conferences, round tables, presentations, meeting-conversations, hours of reflection, etc. are organized. With the introduction of new information technologies, events using multimedia equipment have become popular: exhibitions, presentations, informational educational reviews, and more.
The library is provided with Internet access, which allows students and teachers to quickly receive and exchange information with domestic and foreign educational institutions, libraries and organizations.
An important part of library support for the educational process is the computerization of the reference and bibliographic catalogue. The sova.ws e-learning system is used to create the electronic catalogue.
In the reading room of the college library, access to the resources of the Republican Interuniversity Electronic Library is open. The RIEL information system provides the library, teaching staff, and students with conducting searches on the electronic catalog of library resources, and also provides constant, uninterrupted access to library and information, educational resources of electronic libraries of other RIEL participants http://rmebrk.kz.
The library serves all readers who need the literature presented in its collection, and also contributes to the development of information needs among readers, ensures the completeness and efficiency of their requests, a high culture of service, and creates conditions for working with sources of information.
The library works closely with libraries of other educational institutions, the regional universal scientific library named after. S. Mukanova, Central City Hospital named after. I.P. Shukhov and the Children's and Youth Library named after. G. Musrepova. Joint events, exhibitions and excursions are held.
